There are tears in the fabric of space and time.
Two worlds, much like our own in design, overlap one another in the space-time continuum, yet exist in different dimensions. One is a world very close to our own, mimicking our modern day society and even going as far to be a slightly alternate Earth, with technology slightly ahead of our own. The other is like the old kingdoms of the medieval period, ruled by kings and protected by knights, and its people are capable of using great magical abilities.
For centuries, the two have existed without recognition of one another, but the universe is beginning to unravel.
Within the last century, permanent and temporary tears have opened up, allowing people from both the modern world and the medieval world to wander through - some find their way back again, others are stranded in their new home forever, whilst a select few decide to travel between the two worlds for their own personal reasons. These instances are few and far between, and save for a new missing person's story or the assumption that a family member is dead, little is ever reported about the cases.
But now new tears are beginning to open, and more people are wandering into worlds they don't belong in. The citizens of Glaisemount are beginning to fear that there is a serial killer in their midst, whilst the people of Mercandas are beginning to whisper tales of a monstrous creature that prays on their kingdom. The ordinary folk are getting restless, and their rulers don't know what to do.
But then the king of Mercandas dies - assassinated, if you believe the rumours - and potential heirs have begun to fight amongst themselves, each gaining support from the peasants. Meanwhile, the police of Glaisemount have arrested a group of unruly citizens dressed in medieval clothing and carrying sharp weapons - only to find they possess unearthly abilities, the likes of which they've never seen before.
And all the while, the tears are growing, and people are beginning to question:
