It was the blackest of nights, and at this moment a man was running for his very life. Pain, apprehension, and panic were the only comforters in his time of dire need. The Shadow, from whom the man was fleeing, pursued him and drew closer, practically breathing down his neck. The man uttered a low wail in fear of his demise. From this fear, he ran faster, but he could not escape the inevitable. For the Shadow, was getting closer and closer. For the man, seconds were hours. No matter how fast he ran, the Shadow traced his steps with a dark intent. Suddenly, the man tripped and fell onto the rigid, stone earth. His fate was sealed, with the sound of his bones crunching and his blood splattering upon the ground. The pain her felt was great, so great that his vision became blurred with tears, for he knew he was going to die. His only reality was pain. As his vision cleared, he saw two blazing coals. Not quite believing that two coals could be floating, he blinked and looked again. Before he could get a good look, he felt something grasp his throat. The harsh, icy claws lifted him up, and the man could clearly see now, to his great horror that those were not coals. They were EYES.
The man found words and whimpered, “P-p-please, foul spirit, have mercy upon me! I beg you, do not kill me, I-”
The Shadow interrupted him. “Answer my questions human, and you shall have mercy. Where is the one is seek? The boy. The one how used the power of light has vanished. I must find him for he dared to defile my presence with the light and so he must be taught the ultimate lesson, which is death. Tell me small human, where has he gone?”
“I know not my dread lord, I do not know of whom you speak!” the man said, as he felt the claws of death tighten their iron grip around his neck.
“Do I need to repeat myself?” the voice of the Shadow screamed. “You sheltered him! For the past four days he has been in your house, eating your food, sleeping in your bed, and you are telling me you don’t remember him? Where has he gone?! Tell me now, or shall receive no mercy!” The Shadow screeched, his voice being a loud roar and yet hollow at the same time.
“Please, my lord, I do not know! He just left without a word. I swear it! Had I known that he had disgraced you then I would have handed him over to you. I beg of you to forgive me!”
“Quit your bothersome whining! You have been of no use to me. You have given me no news of where the boy is and you expect mercy? Well, I am a merciful lord. You shall receive your mercy for it is also your punishment. You shall die now.” The Shadow’s grip became so tense that the man’s neck began to bleed.
The man gasped, “Please, my liege, I have a poor family. I have children!”
“Would they die without your care?” The Shadow said, loosening his grip, his eyes loosing their intense heat.
“Yes! Please, oh great one, spare us! Spare me and my family! Have mercy on them”
“Fine, you family shall be ‘spared’ as well.” The Shadow said, and began to choke him yet again. The man, realizing he was going to die, tried to fight back, but his efforts were in vain. The man’s body slowly ceased to move, and the Shadow dropped his motionless corpse. The Shadow looked at the man’s body and began to chant a demonic language. As he did, dark runes appeared in the earth and encircled the corpse. “Arise my minion, your work has just begun!” The Shadow began. “You journey continues, far from done! In life a human, in death a slave! You shall obey me, little naïve! You were weak, but now strong, feed or else you won’t last for long! Hear you master and walk again! Obey me or you shall be slain!”
At once, the once motionless corpse climbed to its feet and made a low pitched moan. Darkness surrounded it like an aura and it looked towards its master attentively.
The Shadow looked at his minion, Time to deal with his family, he thought to himself. “Go now, my faithful slave. Your master knows you are hungry. You wish to feed upon the flesh of the living? You shall. Return to your home, the place you lived in life, and feast upon you old family. Your spouse, your children, and everyone else, kill them and eat their corpses.”
The undead moved awkwardly to feast upon his former family. As he did, the Shadow cackled. Once the undead was out of sight, the Shadow began to think and plot.
“Mortality is such a useless thing. Fools like that one make me glad I am what I am. How empty is this world if I where anything else. To be a demon, is a blessing. But I waste my time with these thoughts. I have to find my vengeance upon this world. As I steal more souls my power grows. Soon, the world shall kneel before me. I will become God. There is a shadow within the Shadows, and that will be the brightest of their pathetic hopes. For I am Drangoth, the new King of this world”
